The Central Kalahari
Emma says – The magic of the Central Kalahari lies in its rhythm — stark and silent in the dry season, then bursting into color and movement after the rains. It’s a reminder that even the harshest landscapes have seasons of renewal and beauty.
The huge Central Kalahari Game Reserve spans approximately 52,000 square kilometres, with wildlife that has adapted to it’s pre-dominently dry, arid spaces. Mostly a flat-seemingly never ending landscape, there are are only two lodges in the reserve itself, with others on private concessions surrounding the reserve. The most famous inhabitants are probably the huge black-maned lion who thrive here, along with oryx and springbok who has adapted to survive in this harsh environment.
Whilst safaris will not be as inundated with sightings as areas such as Chobe Riverfront or the Okavango Delta, the vast emptiness will appeal to travellers who have already been on safari and are looking for something a little different – and the lodges work with the local San tribes to give guests an insight into the traditional San way of life and to showcase the skill of traditional tracking. Take a bird-identifying app and sit for a while by a waterhole, and watch as the visiting antelope, predators and birds are framed in ever-changing light.
The Central Kalahari is a perfect accompaniment to time spent elsewhere on safari, and during the Green Season (November – March) the wildlife numbers swell as the vegetation turns greener throughout the scattered hidden valleys of the area.
