There are numerous private concessions and reserves within the Okavango Delta, and the position of each one is important as it determines the likely wildlife viewing experience and activities available.
Broadly speaking there are three types of environment (season and rainfall dependent). The first are the drier areas, typically towards the fringes of the Okavango Delta itself, where there are fewer rivers and lagoons. In these, the predominant activities are land-based, which include walking safaris, game drives and night drives (and in a select few places, hot air ballooning or helicopter trips). During the drier months in particular, wildlife viewing in these reserves can be spectacular, as thirsty animals predictably move towards water sources, providing excellent spotting opportunities.
The next are the more water-logged areas – with beautiful lagoons and river channels clad in reeds and waterlilies sweeping across the horizon. Typically safari here is slower paced, providing a wonderful chance to explore by foot, looking out for the many resident (and migratory) bird species, gliding across the water in a mokoro steered by your expert guide, or onboard a motorboat. Combining a drier area with a water based area gives a a complete picture into these contrasting areas, and a fantastically in-depth safari.
For those wanting to experience both water and land based activities, there are also some reserves which can offer this, especially the larger areas with a variety of terrains.
