Namibia

A land of contrasts, to us Namibia is the dream destination for those looking for a trip filled with huge sweeping landscapes, top class safari, and variety in the day to day of their trip. The dunes of Sossusvlei are probably what most people’s thoughts will turn to when Namibia is mentioned, and this is certainly one of the incredible highlights to explore.

Other key areas include the isolated Skeleton Coast, where the arid desert meets the Atlantic, Etosha National Park, home to four of the Big 5 as well as a huge variety of other species, and the stunning mountainous views over Damaraland. There is also the costal town of Swakopmund where you can enjoy a wide range of excellent activities and the lesser visited areas of the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa and the Caprivi Strip, an area of lush vegetation, river networks and wildlife that borders Botswana.

Add into the mix opportunities to join rangers on conservation projects, stunning walking trails, marine wildlife viewing and an insight into ancient tribal ways of life, and you have the perfect road trip (or flying) destination.

Best time to travel?

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Namibia is between April and the end of September although, as Namibia is a very dry country with a fraction of the rain of other African countries, travel is possible and recommended year-round. There are some things to be aware of at certain times of year, however. The rainy season is between December and March where days are often hot, particularly in desert areas where this regularly rises above 30 degrees C, and humid with some rain fall although this tends to be localised thunderstorms.

April and May are particularly pleasant with cooler temperatures and plenty of a greenery in the landscapes. Between June and September, the daytime temperature drops to a comfortable 15 – 20 degrees C but can be cold during the night with some desert areas dropping close to freezing. This time of year is particularly dry for Namibia so waterholes are going to teeming with wildlife which is a fantastic sight to see. Things start to warm up again in September and October and wildlife viewing is excellent although the vegetation will be less green, and the roads are dusty. November is very variable, this can be very hot with some rainfall, like December to March, but travel is possible and still recommended.

Car Hire

Self-driving is the most popular way for our clients to navigate around Namibia. Group tours tend to be very small groups with high-end accommodation, and high cost, or very large groups crammed into huge coaches. Most that visit will opt for self-driving which is a flexible and very enjoyable way of exploring the country. You can stop and take pictures when you want to, have a rest, stay at a wildlife sighting for hours, or choose not to stop, the choice is entirely yours. Navigating in Namibia is very easy, the road network is very simple and straight forward to follow.

Choosing the right vehicle and supplier is critically important, as are the terms and conditions around any hire vehicle. We work with Europcar for Namibia who have a good support service, the vehicles are modern and the terms very appealing.

All of the vehicles that we supply have a zero theft and damage excess which includes accident damage, tyre damage, windscreen cover and roadside assistance. We also supply our most popular vehicle, the Ford Ranger double cab, with two spare wheels, although these are rarely needed.

The Ford Ranger double cab 4wd is our recommended vehicle for Namibia. Around 70% of the roads are well maintained dirt roads and this vehicle copes particularly well with these conditions. This is a very comfortable vehicle that comes with modern comforts including air-conditioning, multi-media connection and easy transition to 4wd should you need it.

Finally, our local representative will meet you at your hotel to oversee the vehicle delivery and make sure that everything is in order. They will also give you a cool box, first aid kit, local mobile phone with the phone numbers of the lodges that you are visiting pre-programmed and a roadmap of Namibia with your route highlighted. They will talk through the directions and itinerary in general, taking as much time as you need to run through everything. This local knowledge and guidance are invaluable and makes for a seamless journey through one of the most starkly beautiful places on earth.
