Desert Horse Inn

Speke says – “This is a great lodge and works particularly well as an overnight stop on the way north or south. For those that have the time it is worth spending two nights here to appreciate the surroundings and potential sightings of the desert horses.”

Desert Horse Inn is in a stunning location, in a pristine semi-desert area with wide open plains and mountains in the background. We would usually suggest a stay here on the way north from Fish River Canyon and this works as a base for visiting Luderitz and the Kolmanskop ghost town. The main attraction of the area is the wild desert horses, found nowhere else is in Africa (no one actually knows how they got here!) although there is a decent choice of activities on offer including sundowner and scenic drives, self-guided walking trails and mountain bike trails.

The main lodge is a two-story wooden building that is home to the reception, comfortable lounge, bar and gift shop on the first floor. On the second floor is the restaurant with huge windows which affords fantastic views of the surroundings. There is also a large deck where meals are served during the warm months. Just outside the main building is the lovely swimming pool and sun lounger area, the perfect place to cool off and relax. WiFi is available in the main building.

There are 30 rooms in total here, including three that have an extra single bed and a further three that have twin beds plus bunk beds. The rooms, or bungalows, are in blocks of two and the red brick blends in beautifully with the surrounding. Rooms are large and equipped with a lounge area, tea and coffee making facilities, ceiling fan, air-conditioning and a fridge. Ensuite facilities include a washbasin, toilet, and shower. Finally, there is a private veranda with a wooden table and chairs.
