Fish River Lodge

Speke says – “There is no doubt that the location on the rim of the crater is phenomenal but because of this it can get very windy here at times. Nevertheless, this is a lovely lodge and one that we would have no hesitation in recommending.”

Fish River lodge occupies the perfect spot, right on the edge of the western rim of the canyon with breath-taking views. The lodge is surrounded by quiver trees which affords some iconic photography opportunities of the area. The activities available are extensive including short self-guided rim walks, guided or unguided ‘fat bike’ trails, full day guided canyon drive, canyon sundowner drives and guided hikes of various lengths including a two- and three-day option, all with excellent local guides.

Within the main building there is a bar and comfortable lounge area, surrounded by an impressive fire for the cooler evenings, and dining area and small gift shop. Outside there is a large veranda, where meals are served under the stars depending on the weather, which is a particularly pleasant place to enjoy the stunning views. There is WiFi available here although speeds are low and due to the remoteness, this is temperamental. Finally, there is a swimming pool and relaxing chairs outside, again with incredible views of the crater, that is the perfect place to cool off and relax.

The 20 chalets, 10 either side of the central building, are all positioned at the edge of the crater to enable guests to enjoy the views. These are almost entirely glass at the front and come with twin beds, tea and coffee making facilities, fan and ensuite facilities include a double ash basin, toilet and indoor and outdoor shower with views into the crater. Each room has a veranda with a table and chairs that is a lovely place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
