Palmwag Lodge
- 3 Star
- Best from April to October
- Lovely setting with a great facilities
Palmwag has an enviable location in the north of Damaraland, next to a spring in the Uniab River which regularly flows and allows palm trees to grow around the lodge, this sometimes brings elephant into camp which is a wonderful sight. The Palmwag concession, an area of around 4,500km2, has around 70% of northern Damaraland’s black rhino population as well as a healthy number of desert adapted elephant, kudu springbok, giraffe, zebra and Ostrich. Lion and hyena are occasionally spotted but this is rare.
The main area at Palmwag, a large, thatched building, is home to the large restaurant, comfortable lounge, and bar as well as two large verandas overlooking the reed beds of the river and mountain in the distance. There are two swimming pools, one with sun loungers under shady palm trees and another next to the campsite although, this can get a little busy and sometimes noisy. Activities available here focus on wildlife drives to see the desert adapted wildlife but there are also cultural experiences and guided walks.
There are 32 rooms in total, including two family rooms that can sleep up to six, made up of the standard twin room and the comfort twin rooms. All rooms come equipped with air-conditioning, fan, mini safe, tea and coffee making facilities and are en-suite with toilet, basin, and shower. The comfort rooms are slightly larger and have a nice shady veranda and are located a little further from the main lodge.
