Shipwreck Lodge
- 4.5 Star
- Best from April to October
- Stunning location, super service & activities
Shipwreck lodge, a relatively new offering for the Skeleton Coast, lies just inland of the Atlantic, at the mouth of the Hoarusib River. A stay here offers a true wilderness experience in a very remote part of Namibia. There are a wide range of activities available including drives to explore the shipwrecks of the area, sundowner drives, Hoarusib River excursion where you will drive along exploring the river and striking geological formations as well as possibly sighting the desert adapted elephants, brown hyenas and even lion. Further activities include sand boarding and a scenic quad biking tour over the dunes of the area.
The main area of camp is in the style of a shipwreck which is both inviting and very impressive. Once inside you will find a small but well stocked bar, large and very comfortable lounge area, and dining room. The interior design is quite industrial in many ways, with stone walls and wooden boarding throughout but this seems to fit in well with the area. Just outside is a decked area with a couple of sofas and some comfortable chairs, the perfect place to enjoy the scenery although it is worthy of note that as the area is very exposed it can get very windy and cold here.
There are 10 rooms here, including two family rooms. As with the main lodge these are in the style of a shipwreck with colour coming from the soft furnishings. Within the rooms you will find twin beds, a day bed and a log burner. Carrying on through there is a writing desk and chair with a tea and coffee station and a separate luggage storage area and then the ensuite facilities include a double washbasin toilet and shower. Outside there is a small deck with chairs and a coffee table which is the ideal spot for trying to take in the start beauty of the area.
