Greystoke Mahale
- 4 Star
- Great year round
- Amazing lakeshore setting with excellent guides
Owned and operated by Nomad Tanzania, who are one of the best camp operators in the country, this is a fantastic option in one of the most incredible places on earth. The accommodation is not five-star but more barefoot rustic luxury with every comfort taken care of by a seasoned team of experts, some of the absolute best in the business. Activities here are plentiful with the inevitable highlight being trekking to visit the habituated group M chimpanzees with the phenomenal Nomad guides. Treks into the forest can last anywhere between 30 minutes to several hours and are on forest paths, sometimes with steep inclines. The trek times can vary between different times of year as different fruits grow in different areas of the forest so if you prefer a shorter trek do let us know however these are wild animals and no-one can predict where they are located. Further activities include kayaking on the lake, swimming in the lake from the lodge’s dhow boat, guided forest walks, and local village visits.
One of the nicest things about Greystoke is that all communal areas and rooms are set on the beautiful sandy shore of Lake Tanganyika so the views over the lake, the second largest and second deepest lake in the world, are absolutely stunning. The main part of the lodge, an impressive wood and thatch building is home to a central dining area, lounge, library, open air bar and upper floor viewing deck and lounge, looking out to the lake. On the beach there are a number of wooden and deck chairs to relax on the beach and also a campfire area. Finally there is a raised lounge area, to the side of the beach, that is often used for pre-dinner drinks, the perfect place to relax with a drink in hand and watch the sunset.
The six quirky rooms here are raised on wooden decking and are all made from wood and thatch with the interiors constructed of reclaimed local dhow boats which gives them a fantastic and unique feel. Within the rooms you will find either a double or twin beds, protected by mosquito netting, with bedside tables with electric lamps, writing desk and chair and a decked porch area, overlooking the beach, with tables and safari style chairs as well as a deck lounger. The en-suite facilities include a flushing toilet, sink, and shower, all of which looks out into the forest. The room is finished with a comfortable upstairs viewing platform which is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the lake views.
