Sand Rivers is owned and operated by Nomad Tanzania who are widely recognised as being one of the best safari operators in the country with superb staff and the most fantastic guides. This camp is located on a turn of the Rufiji River with the river going straight from the central building for some way, this affords the most incredible views of a long stretch of the river and all of the wildlife that frequents it. The camp and rooms are all set relatively high on the riverbank with the central, wood and thatch building home to the bar, comfortable lounge and extensive decking that is used for al-fresco dining under the stars.
To the side of the main area is a delightful swimming pool that also overlooks the river, perfect for relaxing and cooling off when not out on safari. Activities here include walking, boat and vehicle safaris as well as catch and release fishing and fly camping. Fly camping is a back to basics camping experience that will see anyone wishing to give this a go set up a very basic but comfortable open-air tent away from the main camp. Accompanied by a professional guide and small team you will be able to experience campfire cooking and a night well and truly under the stars, on a sandy riverbank, in this immense and incredible place – an experience which we highly recommend.
There are five stone and thatch riverside suites, set by the river, and also three hillside suites with private plunge pools. The five riverside rooms are all open fronted with the most fantastic views and come with a huge double, or twin beds, electric lighting and a decked area with comfortable sofa and further seating. The en-suite facilities include a flushing toilet and shower. The hillside suites also enjoy an adjoining lounge and living areas as well as the very pleasant addition of the private plunge pool. Finally, Sand Rivers also offers a private house and the private Kiba point with four suites, both are perfect for large families or small groups travelling together, these are completely separate from the main camp.
