Mdonya Old River Camp

Speke says – “A massive favourite of ours and although relatively basic this is a very comfortable camp with good and hearty home cooking style meals, excellent staff and super guides. We love it!”

Located in a remote area of Ruaha, far from any other accommodation, this is a superb camp and one of our absolute favourites. Although the camp is basic every comfort is taken care of and it is difficult to find anything other than glowing 5 star reviews from all platforms. The camp itself is set on, and around, an old riverbed which is surrounded by bush with wildlife regularly seen around the camp. There are two tents in the central area, one home to a comfortable lounge and the other the dining area although meals are often serviced al-fresco by candle and oil lamp light which is the most fantastic experience. There is also a campfire area which is lit before dinner each night and the perfect way to relax after an afternoon wildlife drive with your favourite drink in hand.

The 12 traditional safari tents are located on the curving banks of the dry river bed and are comfortably furnished with a double or twin beds, a writing desk and veranda with safari chairs for watching the wildlife when not out enjoying the incredible wildlife in the park. The private en-suite facilities include a flushing toilet, dressing room, sink and open roof solar shower. The tents here can also be modified to host families, adding an extra tented room on the veranda so this is a good option for families. There is no electricity within the tent but each evening oil lamps are placed in the bathroom and terrace which give light through the night although you may want to pack a head torch.
