Zanzibar Archipelago

You are likely to have heard of Zanzibar Island, but the Zanzibar archipelago is made up of three large islands, all are vastly different to each other and offer different experiences. The largest, Zanzibar Island, is everything that you could wish for from a beach destination. Palm-fringed fine sandy beaches, a fascinating array of cultural and historical importance, crystal-clear waters, and a host of activities and incredible marine life make up this island.

The choice of accommodation on the islands is incredible with something to suit every taste and budget. The smaller Pemba Island is stunning, covered in lush forest with only a few hotels so, inevitably, there is a slower pace and deserted feel. The beaches are incredible, and the marine life is some of the best in the Indian Ocean. Mafia Island is the smallest of the trio and a mecca for diving, especially around October and November when whale sharks visit the area.

Unguja (Zanzibar) Island

This island is the largest gem of the Zanzibar Archipelago – boasting natural beauty and incredible activities. Its palm trees and fine sandy beaches beckon visitors to unwind in paradise, while the historical capital exudes a captivating charm with its cultural and historical significance. Crystal-clear waters surrounding the island provide a playground for aquatic enthusiasts. Explore the charming Stone Town on Zanzibar Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Swahili culture comes to life in its narrow streets. Whether you’re drawn to the historical allure of Stone Town or the serene tranquillity of the coastline, Zanzibar Island promises a dreamy escape.

Pemba Island

Pemba Island is a hidden jewel within the Zanzibar Archipelago which offers a stark contrast to its larger counterparts. Distinguished by its unspoiled beauty and picturesque landscapes, Pemba Island captivates with a slower pace and sense of tranquillity. Covered in dense forests and adorned with pristine beaches, the island is a haven for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature. With only a handful of hotels, Pemba maintains an intimate and exclusive atmosphere, providing visitors with the rare opportunity to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the surroundings.

Mafia Island

Mafia Island, the smallest gem in the Zanzibar Archipelago trio, is a paradisiacal haven renowned for its remarkable underwater wonders. This diminutive island boasts pristine beaches and a laid-back ambiance, making it an ideal escape for those looking for a more secluded tropical retreat. With a focus on marine conservation, Mafia Island offers not only world-class diving experiences but also the chance to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life. The intimate atmosphere, coupled with a genuine commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the surroundings, creates a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors to Mafia Island.

Whichever island you choose, or perhaps enjoy some island hopping, you are sure to have a fantastic time and return well and truly rested from this beautiful part of Tanzania.
