Matemwe Beach Lodge

Speke says – “This is a well-established chic beach lodge with a beautiful setting on coral cliffs. Relax in your hammock on your private veranda with the waves gentle breaking beneath you, absolutely perfect. The only thing to bear in mind is there isn’t a beach to speak of right in front of the lodge but to the side. This is however a stunning beach.”

Matemwe is located on the north-east of Zanzibar overlooking the stunning Mnemba Atol. The lodge and rooms are set on top of a low coral cliff with the beautiful Matemwe beach easily reached to the side of the lodge. The communal areas include a large open sided thatch building where you will find a comfortable lounge and dining room which leads out to a deck where delicious meals can be enjoyed al-fresco. Within a smaller building nearby you will find the bar and just above this the small spa that offers a range of treatments. There are two swimming pools, one infinity pool with fantastic ocean views and one beneath which features a cascading waterfall and is shadier. Unlike many accommodation options, some activities are included within the cost of your stay include reef walks, village visits, kayaking and one snorkelling trip. There are also many other activities available payable locally.

There are 12 rooms, including six double and six twin/triple rooms, set on the low coral cliffs, and these are all surrounded by beautiful gardens and have a private sea facing veranda with hammock and sofa, the perfect place to relax and enjoy the spectacular sea views. Facilities within the room include over the bed air-conditioning, ceiling fans and WiFi and the en-suite bathrooms all come with a shower and bath.
