If star ratings were judged on atmosphere, staff, and service then Pongwe would be the highest rated property in Zanzibar. The location is absolutely stunning, one of the best on the island, fine powdery white sand with the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean lazily lapping the shore and the gentle sea breeze keeping things comfortable during the heat of the day. With beautiful flowers and palm trees dotted around the property and along the shore it is difficult to imagine a more perfect tropical island setting.

The property itself is on a long stretch of land that starts with the reception which leads through to a large wood and thatch central building that is home to the dining area, bar, and lounge. Just outside you will find a covered beachside lounge next to the fantastic swimming pool and sun lounger area that is raised above the beach and sea by natural rocks and affords the most idyllic ocean views.

There are 20 rooms in total at Pongwe, consisting of three room categories including the garden view rooms, beachfront rooms, and the sea view suites. All are similar in décor and style, thatch with thick white stone wash walls, ceiling fans, hand-crafted doors and furniture, stone floor, small tables, and chairs, as well as large en-suite bathrooms with showers. Some of the rooms have additional beds so are particularly suitable for families. The garden rooms are a mere 30-second walk to the beach and come with a private terrace with seating whereas the beachfront rooms are set on a large terrace with private seating and also have a ceiling fan. The sea view suites also have a large wardrobe area, ceiling fan, and a private terrace with sun loungers and a private plunge pool which is a fantastic way to cool off.
