Serengeti
The great spectacle of the 1000km migration of two million wildebeest, zebra and other smaller plains wildlife is one of natures most incredible sights and sounds. The presence and density of large predators will awe the most seasoned safari goer.
You might think that, with so much wildlife, you would be able to see the migration wherever and whenever you visit but that is not the case. The Serengeti is such a huge area (roughly 15’000 km2, about the size of Kosovo and Hong Kong combined!) that the right time of year and place is critical. This is where we will use our experience and expertise to get you in the right place at the right time.
The Serengeti is a wildlife lover’s dream even without the migration, a landscape of lakes, small rivers, grassy savannah, and swamps – in the local dialect Serengeti translates as ‘endless plains’, very fitting! The predator density is significant with lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena regularly seen as well as wild dog often sighted. Plains wildlife, to name a fraction, consists of elephant, buffalo, gazelle, eland, topi, waterbuck, giraffe and impala sighted daily with the population of rhino increasing every year. The birdlife is also very impressive with over 500 species including the marabou stork, many species of vulture, ostrich, secretary bird and the kori bustard, to name just a few.
The Serengeti is fantastic for safari year-round (perhaps avoid March to May which is the wet season but if you want to travel then you will visit at the quietest time of year!). With such an incredible variety and density of wildlife, it is easy to see why this incredible place has a reputation of being one of the best safari destinations on the planet, safari here will not disappoint, such a magical experience!
South, Central or Northern Serengeti?
The Serengeti National Park is huge, roughly 15,000 square kilometers, about the same size same size as the Gambia and Brunei combined! So, it makes sense to split this into different areas for wildlife viewing but also logistics. For wildlife viewing the south is particularly good from December to March as this is when the great wildebeest and zebra migration are in the area. Outside of these times of year, you would want to push further into the central Serengeti which is excellent for wildlife all year round.
The western areas are a lot more hit-and-miss, theoretically the migration should pass through around May, but they move quickly and if you miss them then the wildlife is not as good in this area. Heading to the north of the Serengeti, arguably the most picturesque with more of a varied topography, around the middle of June until the middle to end of July, and again around October to November, is superb, again, the migration should be in the area. Generally, the massive herds cross into the Kenyan Masai Mara around the end of July until the end of September.
As far as logistics are concerned the different areas are easily navigated although there are some factors to be aware of. Generally, the Serengeti would be the last stop on a safari adventure of the area (unless you would prefer not to have any light aircraft flights, please let us know if that is the case and we can easily arrange this) and then you would either fly on to your next destination or to your departing airport. The only area that is slightly different is the northern areas of the Serengeti, to get to the north you would likely need a light aircraft flight to get up there or an overnight stop on the way, this is too far to drive in one day. Whichever location you choose we will take care of all of the arrangements, consult with you on the best location and route, and ensure that your safari adventure operates seamlessly.
