South Damaraland
Southern Damaraland has rightly become a staple on a ‘must-do’ list of Namibia, combing spectacular landscapes with desert adapted wildlife. Home to Brandberg Mountain (Namibia’s tallest mountain), and the Spitzkoppe Mattherhorn, the examples of rock art at each of these – alongside Twyfelfontein – provide a fascinating inside into the tribal past of the area. We recommend exploring these sites with a guide in the late afternoon sun to truly experience them at their best.
As you drive through the region, ongoing community life is evidenced in the passing donkey carts and tiny roadside stalls which are absent further south in the country. Of course, a visit to Damaraland isn’t complete without an excursion to track the desert elephant who migrate through the area – for many, this will be their first glimpse of elephant and a wonderful introduction prior to heading on to Etosha. We recommend spending two nights to do justice to the plethora of sights to visit and explore.
