Erongo & the Central Highlands
Often overlooked, this mountainous region attracts travelers able to spend longer exploring the diverse landscapes of Namibia and also allows a glimpse into the past with excellent examples of ancient rock art. Best known is the iconic Spitzkoppe Matterhorn, the magma core of a long-ago eroded mountain range visible from miles away, and featuring vast rock formations – visits here are possible for a few hours, though for the best chance to explore the area fully we recommend staying overnight at one of the lodges in the area.
The Erongo Mountains also offer walking tracks, where, accompanied by expert guides, travellers can experience the area at a leisurely pace, soaking in the opportunity to explore on foot and learn stories from the present-day communities as well as the past. Having explored this area extensively this is wonderful to break the journey from Swakopmund to Damaraland, and whilst wildlife sightings are likely to be sporadic, the huge vistas and feeling of getting to know a lesser-known area of Namibia are very rewarding.
