The Caprivi Strip

The Caprivi Strip is like nowhere else in Namibia and a stark contrast to the arid landscapes seen in much of the rest of the country. Located in the north this area stretches right along the border of Botswana to the east and the high rainfall and river systems supports lush vegetation and diverse and rich wildlife. The Kwando and Okavango rivers wind through the Caprivi region and feed the swamps, waterfalls and rapids that are a joy to witness and explore.

There are several national parks along the Caprivi, all offering slightly different and wonderful experiences. The Mahangu is rich with wildlife with hippo, elephant, buffalo, lion and a large variety of antelope species to name a few. The savannah plains of Bwabwata and wetlands are home to abundant wildlife including elephant, buffalo, greater kudu, roan, and sable antelope as well as lion and leopard and there have been a few sightings of wild dog although these are very rare.

Further east is the Mudumu and Nkasa National Parks noted for large herds of buffalo and the largest wetland area in Namibia. These reed beds and natural channels are a haven for a wide variety of wildlife including hippo, Nile crocodile, elephant, and a huge variety of birdlife. Water levels permitting, boat cruises are offered in many of the accommodation options along the Caprivi which is a very relaxing and pleasant way to explore, the sunset boat cruises are particularly enjoyable.
