Tarangire
A visit to Tarangire is often overlooked in favour of going straight to the Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti but this huge park, covering 2’600 square kilometres, certainly should not be, if time allows. Tarangire has a wonderful diversity of wildlife all set amongst rivers, plains and swamplands and numerous huge baobab trees, giving the park a perfect safari setting. Hot air balloon safaris are possible here and if you like the idea of stretching your legs then walking safaris are possible from some camps. The park is at its best during the dry season (between June and October) where the river and swamp systems provide a lifeline for the abundant wildlife. During this time, you will witness an elephant migration where it is common to see herds of hundreds of these majestic beasts gather in and around the swamps which is an incredible sight!
The density and diversity of other wildlife is second only to the Serengeti, and you can expect to see regular sightings of buffalo, eland, oryx, kudu, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hippo and predators include leopard, lion, hyena and occasionally cheetah.
With all of the water around the birdlife here is seriously impressive with over 500 recorded species including ostrich, hoopoes, brown parrots, hornbills, yellow-necked spurfowl, white-bellied go-away-bird, and guineafowl to name just a few.
As Tarangire is often overlooked the park doesn’t feel busy or crowded and with some spectacular scenery and wildlife, it is well worth considering including within your safari adventure.
