Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar is surrounded by the most incredible coastline, flawless palm fringed sandy beaches with the warm gin-clear waters of the Indian ocean, this is a true paradise island. Known as the spice island, the largest of the archipelago at around 80km long and 30km wide, you will still find chillies, nutmeg, turmeric, cloves and cinnamon growing wild here and a visit to a local spice farm for a guided tour is well worth it. Other inland activities include visiting Jozani forest and enjoying exploring the nature trails where you will find antelope, birds and the rare red colobus monkey as well as heading north to the dhow boat building centre where you can watch master craftsmen build boats of all different sizes. While there you can also visit the turtle hatching and sanctuary programme which is fascinating. A visit to the ancient Kiwengwa caves is also excellent and recommended.
Water sports are plentiful in Zanzibar with almost every water-based activity you can think of available.
The scuba diving and snorkelling, from the reef located around one mile out to sea, is particularly impressive with such a vast array of marine life from a wide range of dive sites including turtles, dolphins, kingfish, trevally, tuna, and reef sharks to name a fraction.
Stone Town
Stone Town, a UNESCO world heritage site in Zanzibar, was mostly built in the 19th century and is an historical trading centre unlike any other. Exploring the labyrinth of narrow and winding streets is fascinating, you will see huge intricately carved wooden doors with brass studs and heavy locks and some fantastic architecture including old buildings with overhanging balconies, mostly untouched by time. Visits to the Zanzibar Museum, Sultans palace, the Arab fort and the Anglican Cathedral and former slave market site are all well worth it.
To make the most of your time here (and so that you don’t get lost!) we would recommend using a local guide, which we can arrange in advance.
Another worthwhile excursion from Stone Town is a visit to Prison Island. You set off from the beach for a 20-minute boat ride where, on arrival, you can freely explore this little piece of history. You can also enjoy seeing the resident giant turtles on the island, around 50 of them with some over 120 years old.
If you like exploring different foods of the world then we highly recommend spending some time at the Forodhani food market which comes alive in the early evening. You will find all sorts of street stalls selling the most delicious food, all in a friendly and relaxed environment. Stone Town is great for a day trip but with so much to see and do we would recommend a stay of two nights to fully explore and appreciate it.
